Current Deck List

CREATURES:

TOTAL: 19

SPELLS:

TOTAL: 21

LAND:

TOTAL: 20

NOTE: This deck currently only has one Damnation. I am working on getting a hold of more. The deck list here is what I am currently working on changing it to. It currently has 4 Avatars, a Myojin of Cleansing Fire, 4 Wrath of God, and slightly different land ratios. It is lacking, of course, the full 3 Damnation cards.

Spirit of Woe

Three Zubera cards

Life Gain for me, card loss and damage for my opponent...Zuberas are nasty little buggers!

This deck came about when I realized how nasty Zubera Spirits really were. Unless there has been changes or errata concerning how these guys work it only takes a few of these guys to put a hurt on an opponent. I immediately started plans for this deck. Initially I had tried to make a 5-color version, but to do so effectively I'd need better mana sources...since the older pre-4th ed. Dual Lands are hard to come by I went with the three colors that impressed me the most. White was a shoe-in since I needed the Wrath of God, Black had Avatar of Woe to take advantage of all the creature deaths, and Red had Rukh Egg to add to the mass-removal effectiveness.

Damnation and Wrath of God cards

Mass Creature Removal...what can I say?

For those unfamiliar with the critter, when multiple Zuberas are placed into the graveyard their abilities go on the stack. When the stack is resolved, each Zubera checks to see how many Zuberas have gone to the graveyard when it resolves. For example, suppose I have 1 Ashen-Skin Zubera, 1 Silent-Chant Zubera, and 2 Ember-Fist Zubera cards in play. I send them all to the graveyard at once (with a Wrath of God) and each creature's ability goes on the stack. When resolving the stack each Zubera checks and sees that 4 Zuberas were put into the graveyard. The Ashen-Skin Zubera now forces my opponent to discard 4 cards, The Silent-Chant Zubera gains me 8 life (2 life for each Zubera), and the two Ember-Fist Zuberas deal 4 damge each to my opponent. Not bad for 4 critters and a WoG.

Of course getting the Wrath of God or Damnation to go off can sometimes be tricky - especially facing opponent(s) playing blue. A couple of other cards help out here. The Goblin Bombardment works just as well provided you sack them all before the stack resolves. Plus you get to deal a few extra points of damage to boot! Another good card that works well is Boseiju, Who Shelters All which allows me to cast my mass-removal spells without fear of them being countered.

Avatar of Woe and Rukh Egg cards

Two critters that take good advantage of mass creature destruction - Avatar of Woe & Rukh Egg FTW!.

Avatar of Woe is there to keep the playing field leveled after a mass-removal spell. This enhances the effectiveness of any Rukh Tokens that may have been genrated as well. Of course I'm a sucker for the WoG/Rukh combo. Nothing like leveling the playing field of critters and getting a 4/4 flier the next round to pummel an opponent with!

DECK STRATEGY TIPS: This deck is fairly straightforward. Build up a bit then, when the time is right, clear the board of creatures. Keep the Rukh Eggs in play so you have some automatic air support after a Wrath or Damnation. Use the Recurring Nightmare to get an Avatar into play early to deal with strong threats. Apply a beatdown immediately after a battlefield clearing spell so as not to waste the moment. Chances are if your opponent knows the deck they will have a creature or two in reserve so get an Avatar in play as soon as you can after a Wrath or Damnation is cast.

I haven't kept up on Magic the last few sets. I bought a bit of Timespiral block, but that is about it. I'd like to eventually pick up the other old-school dual lands, and perhaps go through and revamp the mana curve a bit but I'm not keeping current with the game so I don't know the new cards at all. If anyone has suggestions of good cards I might want to include in this deck from any of the sets after the Time Spiral block please feel free to email me with ideas.
