Terrain Tutorial: Snow Effects
Making snow for a miniature base is cheap and easy. The three ingredients are: Water, Elmer's Glue, and Baking Soda. The mixture consists of one part glue, one part water and then mixing in the baking soda to the desired consistency. The thickness of the mixture depends on what you want to achieve. Most often you will want the mixture to be the consistency of a firm milkshake - that is you want it thick enough that it won't run off of whatever surface you are applying it to, but thin enough that it will 'smooth' itself out so that you get a nice even surface. Snow falling from the sky covers everything evenly so you will want to pay attention to the thickness and coverage of the mixture. Apply to the desired thickness. NOTE: you will want to paint under the areas where the snow is applied with a coat of white paint. This will help prevent the base colors showing through in areas where the mixture may be thin. I also find that a diluted blue ink can be applied to the 'shadowed' areas of the snow after it dries to give it more depth and realism. I use 1 part blue ink to 6 parts water.
I'll make a more in-depth write up when I get around to doing my next snow-covered miniature - I'll be sure and get some photos.
